INDIANAPOLIS, IN, UNITED STATES, September 2, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The U.S. Census Bureau recently released statewide totals for building permits issued in July and shows 1,797 single-family permits were pulled. The 1,797 permits pulled in July of 2026 are down 10% from the 1,995 permits pulled in June of 2026. This number is up 2% from July of 2025, when 1,766 permits were pulled. The single-family permit numbers (11,898) for 2026 are down 2% compared to the first seven months of 2025 (12,085).

“While July’s permit activity slowed from June, the year-over-year increase and Indiana’s position as one of the leading states in the Midwest show that demand for new housing remains strong,” said IBA President Marcy DeShong. “Indiana continues to need more homes at all price points, and we must remain focused on addressing the regulatory costs and other barriers that make it more difficult to build. IBA will continue advocating for policies that support housing production, improve affordability and help more Hoosiers find a home that meets their needs.”

Indiana is second in the Midwest in single-family housing activity behind Ohio. With 1,797 single-family permits issued in July, the state trailed neighboring Ohio (1,864) but outpaced Michigan (1,504), Illinois (1,057), and Kentucky (686).
