China is Evolving their Export Strategy in the Face of High Tariffs

China Factories Setting Up Direct Retailers in USA

Under the traditional model, America imported the product. Under the emerging direct model, America may also be importing the retailer.”
— Alan Hutchinson
CHICAGO, IL, UNITED STATES, September 2, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- HTmarket.com has published a new investigation examining a growing shift in the furniture industry: Chinese manufacturers moving beyond traditional factory supply relationships and increasingly selling directly to American consumers through U.S. companies, domestic warehouses and third-party logistics networks.

The investigation began with research into home theater seating competitor, but expanded into a broader examination of Chinese-owned and China-connected furniture businesses establishing American entities, stocking U.S. warehouses and operating consumer-facing retail websites.

“This started as research into one competitor, but the more public corporate filings, import records, company disclosures and trade data I reviewed, the more I realized this was a much bigger story,” said Alan Hutchinson, owner of HTmarket.com. “American retailers are no longer simply competing with products manufactured in China. In some cases, they are increasingly competing directly with the manufacturers themselves.”

The report examines two major adaptations to U.S. tariffs.

First, some Chinese manufacturers shifted production into countries such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand and Mexico. Federal Reserve research has documented the growing role of Chinese-owned firms in Vietnam’s export expansion to the United States, showing that production can move geographically while Chinese ownership and supplier relationships remain involved.

Second, some manufacturers are moving further downstream by establishing U.S. companies, using American warehouses or third-party logistics providers, and selling directly to U.S. consumers.

That structure can effectively become:

Chinese manufacturer or brand → U.S. subsidiary or LLC → U.S. warehouse or 3PL → American consumer

The report also examines the economic impact of this model. Under the traditional furniture-import structure, an American importer or retailer typically captured a significant portion of the value between the overseas factory cost and the final retail selling price. That money supported U.S. warehousing, payroll, advertising, customer service, warranty support, transportation, taxes and retail profit.

When the overseas manufacturer also controls the U.S. importing and retail operation, the same foreign-controlled organization can potentially capture the manufacturing, importing and retail margins.

“Under the traditional model, America imported the product,” Hutchinson said. “Under the emerging direct model, America may also be importing the retailer.”

The investigation also raises questions about consumer transparency. A shopper may see a U.S. corporation, American business address, toll-free number, domestic warehouse inventory and fast U.S. shipping, while the company’s underlying ownership or operating connection to China may be far less prominent.

The investigation uses public corporate filings, company disclosures, import records and government trade data to examine how overseas manufacturers can increasingly control the commercial chain from production through the final consumer sale.
