France Opens First EU Consulate in Greenland
In an official release, the ministry confirmed that Poirier arrived in Greenland and formally began his mandate as France’s consul general in the Arctic capital.
"In accordance with the announcements made by President Macron in Greenland in June 2025, the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs is increasing its consular network and becomes the first European Union country to set up a consulate general in Greenland,"
According to the statement, the newly appointed consul general will play a central role in supporting the French population residing in Greenland, while also being responsible for strengthening ongoing cultural, scientific, and commercial collaboration initiatives with Greenlandic partners.
The ministry further emphasized that France, Denmark, and Greenland are already connected through strong bonds of friendship and significant shared ventures, reaffirming France’s continued respect for Denmark’s territorial sovereignty.
President Emmanuel Macron’s earlier declaration came at a time of renewed interest from US President Donald Trump in asserting American authority over Greenland, citing national security issues linked to Russia and China. Trump had also issued threats of economic sanctions against European nations resisting any attempt to seize control of the Danish territory.
Those warnings were later rescinded following his meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte during the World Economic Forum in Davos, where Trump stated that a framework had been established for a potential agreement concerning Greenland and the wider Arctic region.
