UN Chief Announces Formation of 40-Expert AI Panel
The Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence comprises 40 prominent experts spanning multiple continents and disciplines.
Guterres declared: "Today, we are taking an important step to help ensure artificial intelligence serves all of humanity." He emphasized the panel's historic significance, adding: "It will be the first global, fully independent scientific body dedicated to helping close the AI knowledge gap and assess the real impacts of AI across economies and societies."
The Secretary-General stressed to journalists that this initiative arrives at a crucial juncture when objective, trustworthy AI analysis has become indispensable, positioning the panel as an authoritative resource.
Following a worldwide open recruitment that attracted over 2,600 candidates, officials narrowed the field to 40 specialists with extensive cross-disciplinary knowledge. Guterres clarified that every member will operate independently, noting they will serve in their personal capacity, independent of any government, company or institution.
Panel members will fulfill a three-year mandate starting from their official appointment date.
Guterres concluded with urgency: "AI is transforming our world. The question is whether we will shape this transformation together, or allow it to shape us. At a time of deep geopolitical tension and growing technological rivalry, we urgently need common ground -- and a practical basis for cooperation based on science and solidarity. That is what this panel can help deliver."
