Sudanese Walk Thousands of Kilometers to Escape Attacks
“The citizens who were forcibly displaced from El-Fasher, Bara, and Al-Nahud did not go to Nyala or Al-Fula or to any area under militia control in Darfur's cities or West Kordofan,” Burhan stated on the social media platform X, owned by a US company.
The Sudanese head of state emphasized that those displaced “chose to walk thousands of kilometers to areas under state and government forces' control, where they find security and the essentials of life.”
In the previous month, the RSF captured El-Fasher, the capital city of North Darfur, where it reportedly carried out mass killings, as reported by both local and international humanitarian organizations.
The takeover has raised fears that the offensive could solidify the nation’s division along geographic lines.
As reported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), almost 89,000 individuals have fled El-Fasher and nearby regions in North Darfur since last month, bringing the total number of internally displaced people across Sudan to over 10 million.
Out of Sudan’s 18 states, the RSF currently controls all five states within the Darfur region, excluding limited northern zones in North Darfur that remain under the army’s command.
Meanwhile, the Sudanese Armed Forces maintain authority over the remaining 13 states situated in the southern, northern, eastern, and central parts of the country, including the capital, Khartoum.
