EU, Trump talk about finalizing transatlantic trade agreement
(MENAFN) European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and U.S. President Donald Trump engaged in a constructive conversation on Sunday, as the European Union intensifies efforts to finalize a transatlantic trade agreement before July 9, according to EU officials.
An EU spokesperson described the call as a "good exchange," noting that Trump remains in ongoing communication with EU leaders. The EU aims to reach at least a preliminary agreement by July 9 to prevent the activation of new U.S. tariffs scheduled for August 1.
EU Commission representatives reported meaningful advancements toward this goal, following the recent visit of EU Commissioner Maros Sefcovic to Washington and subsequent consultations with EU member states. Dialogue continues at both political and technical levels to secure a deal beneficial to the EU, its businesses, consumers, and the broader global economy.
When asked about letters from Trump detailing specific tariff conditions, EU officials refrained from commenting, citing a lack of direct receipt and the preference to avoid responding to U.S. administration statements.
Earlier this year, the U.S. had imposed reciprocal tariffs on many nations but suspended them temporarily to allow negotiations aimed at resolving trade disputes.
